Did you know that the Leatherback Turtle is the largest living species of reptile on Earth? And yes you do have the opportunity to see these amazing creatures come onto the beach to lay their eggs right here in Grenada. St. Patrick’s Environmental and Community Tourism (SPECTO) is a rural conservation group and the largest national advocates for Leatherback Turtle conservation. SPECTO works with community members to raise awareness of the need to protect this almost extinct species. During the laying season they give guided tours onto the beach. Money generated by SPECTO tours go directly into the rural communities of St. Patrick’s helping to implement panel discussions on climate change and biodiversity in the community.
Tours start at the Turtle Center on Bathway Beach at 7:30pm with a short presentation where you learn invaluable information about the history of Leatherbacks, conservation efforts in Grenada and essential beach rules so no harm or distraction is caused during nesting. From there you walk down the beach in groups of 13 to wait for the turtles to emerge from the sea.(hopefully the wait is not too long)
Turtle Watching can also be added on to an I'm Local Island Tour. You would stay in the North end of the Island for dinner and then proceed to Bathway Beach for the evening. Contact us for more information and price adjustment.
You will be picked up by one of our tour guides at your place of residence between 5:30 and 6:00pm on Wednesday June 27th. Once everyone is on board you will head to the north end of the country which is about a 1 1/2 hour drive. The first presentation of the evening is at Bathway Beach at 7:30pm. After experiencing this wonderful occurrence you will head back to St.George's to be dropped off at home.
Please note, the turtles are not on any schedule lol, you may be waiting on the beach in the moonlight listening to the waves for a while....... this too is all part of the experience.
I'm Local likes to inform the tour guides at Bathway Beach of a group coming up so please try to give us 24 hours notice. Thanks.
